A problem for a small ensemble is finding music of the right standard with exactly the right parts to give appropriate balance. To solve this problem, we have started to use MuseScore – both the score repository and the music editing software. There are numerous advantages with this approach. Parts can be swapped about between instruments; sections that are too difficult can be edited out; and audio files of how the piece should sound like for our ensemble can be produced for individuals to practice to. As we’ve taken on increasingly complex pieces, the latter advantage has been especially useful. To enable the person practicing to get their instrument together before the audio starts, an introductory couple of bars has been added to some audios.
This page includes most of the mp3 files we use for practice. I suppose we don’t sound quite this good, but we’re getting there!
